“This is a terrifically interesting and enjoyable debut album from a young, predominantly British group well worth watching. K’antu comprises seven multi-instrumentalists and singers, producing a rich texture; their extensive use of lute, guitar, hammered dulcimer and generous percussion strengthens their sound further. They are conservatoire-trained and their repertoire - a selection of pan-European music spanning from about 1450 to 1650 and ranging from the standard to the fairly obscure - reflects a solid research base, but their treatment of it is a million miles from anything dry or academic. Heavily inflected with folk and world music vocabularies, and with flagrant disregard for the authenticity police, their performances are joyously individual. Though this is a creative rather than a technical showcase, the latter isn’t lacking. Warmly recommended.”
